carolina day school

Carolina Day School is located in Biltmore Forest.  It is a distinguished independent, co-ed, college preparatory school

serving grades pre-K through 12. It consists of a lower, middle, and upper school.

It is a member of the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools and the National Association of Independent Schools.

History

Carolina Day School was founded in 1987 through the merger of Asheville Country Day School and St. Genevieve/Gibbons Hall.

Asheville Country Day School which thrived on the current campus, was established in 1936 as a private day school.

Established in 1908, St. Genevieve-of-the-Pines was a Catholic day and boarding school, which emphasized a strong foundation in the liberal arts. The St. Genevieve property was sold to AB Tech when the schools merged in 1987.

On June 15th, 2015, Renovation on the lower school by Clark Nexson began in June of 2015.  The renovations included creating a new library, adding solar panels, and other miscellaneous updates. The renovations to the lower school were finished on January 16th, 2016.

Upper School Campus Renovation

Thanks to philanthropic partnerships and support of families in the community, CDS is deep into a project to completely redesign and renovate the Upper School’s exterior, front acreage, entrance, and lobby. The finished product, shown in the above rendering, will be transformative to the campus appearance and functionality, and it will profoundly improve and elevate the overall environment for students and teachers.

The project will expand and extend the Upper School’s facade into a large, pergola-style canopy to provide shelter and diffuse light through glass solar panels. The exterior will boast a new green space as well as an outdoor amphitheater large enough for all of CDS’s four divisions. A newly designed reception area and entrance will improve security and make guest reception more seamless. The project will also improve the campus’s entrance and the traffic flow during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Campus roads at the entrance will be reconfigured and widened to accommodate two lanes for traffic each way, including turn lanes into both the north and south parking lots.

This project is part of a three-phase plan to enhance academic facilities at CDS.

Carolina Day School & The Key School

If your child is not meeting his or her potential due to struggles with reading, spelling, writing, and sometimes math, Key School’s unique program can offer hope. Key School was established in 1997 to provide a high-quality, innovative education for bright children with language-based learning differences, like dyslexia, dysgraphia, and/or dyscalculia. As a division of Carolina Day School, students and families who join Key School are an integrated and important part of community life at CDS. Not only does the Key School division offer tailored instruction for bright children with language-based learning differences, it also provides a rich academic and social experience via a full day, well-rounded program and the ability to participate in all aspects of student life at Carolina Day School.

The Key School Mission

The Key School provides a personalized and emotionally sound educational program that is scientifically designed to overcome academic challenges experienced by students with a dyslexic learning profile and foster the innate strengths that accompany dyslexic thinking.
