About Biltmore forest

Biltmore Estate Post Card

The Birth of Biltmore Forest

In 1916, following an unprecedented flood in Asheville and resulting in serious damage to Biltmore Village and the Biltmore Estate, the trustees of the George Vanderbilt Estate sold some 1,500 acres of the Biltmore Estate lands bordering on Hendersonville Road.  The Biltmore Estate Company was formed to develop almost 1,500 acres and create one of the finest residential parks in the country. The Town of Biltmore Forest was officially chartered in 1923.

At that time, the plan of the town included restrictions, which included that no lots could be subdivided for 21 years.

Lots were mostly 3 to 5 acres and priced from $5,000 with a minimum cost of house to be built on each lot varying from $7,500 to $25,000.  Today Biltmore Forest encompasses just under three square miles and has a population

of about 1500 people, with around 570 residences.

Biltmore Village

Biltmore Village was originally modeled after and still, today resembles a small English village with it's quaint shops, restaurants, old brick sidewalks and cobblestone streets.  It boasted the area’s first railroad station but was transformed into an idyllic village that functioned as an independent and self-sustaining community

Biltmore Village Flood of 2024

The Flood

As a community, we have faced adversity before and emerged more resilient each time. The same holds true for our current recovery. Currently, most of the villages charming shops, restaurants, galleries and inns remain closed, but are working hard to re-open.

Please be patient as they move through their rebuilding process.

Biltmore Forest Country Club

The Country Club

Biltmore Forest Country Club is a private, invitation only club founded in 1922 as part of the grand vision of the Vanderbilt family

to create an exclusive residential enclave in the Asheville area. This community, known as Biltmore Forest, was developed on land

originally part of the Biltmore Estate, the expansive property

owned by George Washington Vanderbilt II.

The club was established to provide a social and recreational centerpiece for the affluent residents of the newly developed neighborhood.

The golf course at the heart of the Biltmore Forest Country Club

was designed by the legendary Scottish-American golf course

architect Donald Ross. Known for his masterful work,

Ross created a course that blends seamlessly with

the natural landscape, offering challenging play while

preserving the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The course officially opened in 1922 and quickly gained a reputation

for its impeccable design and pristine conditions.

In addition to its renowned golf course, the Biltmore Forest

Country Club featured a stately clubhouse, which served as the

social hub for members. The clubhouse was designed to reflect the elegance and sophistication of the surrounding community,

offering luxurious amenities, dining facilities, and spaces for

social events. The club quickly became a centerpiece of social life in Asheville, hosting many notable figures and events over the decades.

Throughout the 20th century, the Biltmore Forest Country Club

maintained its reputation for excellence.  It has hosted

numerous prestigious tournaments, drawing golfers from

across the globe. The club’s commitment to

maintaining the integrity of its original design, while

incorporating modern amenities, has allowed it to

thrive as a premier destination. The club’s membership

has included prominent families, business leaders,

and cultural figures, contributing to its storied legacy.

Today, the Biltmore Forest Country Club remains a cornerstone

of the Biltmore Forest community. It continues to honor

its rich history while evolving to meet the needs of its members.

The club’s blend of tradition and innovation ensures that

it will remain a cherished institution for generations to come.
